Demon’s Souls Remake Review A Masterpiece Remake

Loot the corpse to obtain a Cling Ring, which is incredibly useful when fighting in soul form. Demon’s Souls Remake for the PlayStation 5 is the latest rendition of the original PS3 title. Like stone worms crawling out of the ground, fire lizards are weak to magical damage. The easiest way to kill them will be with a weapon that deals magic damage or using a magic spell. Otherwise, the fight with a lizard will be very long because it is resistant to physical damage. Remember that after killing the lizard, you have a short while to move away from it.

Several gaming news sites have commented that because the Demon’s Souls Remake was released at the Future of Gaming event, it’s a PS5 exclusive. This may be true but before it’s confirmed as fact, more reputable sources are being pursued. The Uchigatana has been a standard for use at the beginning of any Souls game.

The biggest unanswered question may be whether or not Demon’s Souls will embrace some of the innovations of the later entries in the Souls series. The fact that Demon’s Souls is the first-ever Souls game is something that is quite palpable from the very first second that people boot up the old game. From Software and Hidetaka Miyazaki definitely experimented with a ton of the mechanics in the game, crafting an experience that is as enjoyable as it is confusing. One of the biggest reasons why people are up-in-arms about the Demon’s Souls remake is the greedy pre-order bonuses and DLC equipment that serve as nothing more than bait for some people to spend even more money on the title.

Enemy AI hasn’t been tweaked at all so if you are a veteran who has gone through Demon’s Souls before, you can expect a lot of the same strategies and builds to work, barring glitches and exploits, which have been fixed. If you’re a veteran of the original game, remember cheesing Maneater through the fog door on the bridge? However, combat is the name of the game and if you’ve played Dark Souls or any of its sequels, you know what you’re in for. Combat is grounded and brutal, where enemies can and will fight unfairly with glee. The sense of accomplishment from finally beating a challenging foe or discovering a hidden area is immense.

If the graphical upgrades aren’t really that much of a game-changer for a particular gamer, then these people will feel little to no difference between the original and the remake. So, while the combat might look somewhat flashy, it’s still the same game with just more distracting animations. There’s AF88 that would put the remake a peg over the original in any way. A great example of this would be the bare-knuckle parry, which punches the enemy several times in a truly visceral fashion. It goes without saying that Demon’s Souls has made the act of going through the game bare-handed viable simply because of this amazing animation. There’s no other game right now that truly encapsulates the next-gen feel other than Demon’s Souls right now, which looks more beautiful than anyone could’ve imagined in their wildest dreams.

It’s really a shame that Bluepoint went through all the trouble to remake the game from the ground up, but didn’t fix these two things. Thankfully Fexelea, Samurai_Masurao and a few others dug deeper, compiling a list of these convoluted mechanics in the first Demon’s Souls Wiki in Japanese, and eventually English. Word spread as players banded together to help one another through Demon’s Souls turning it into a cult classic, a phenomenon not seen in gaming since. In short, the Souls community would not exist as it does today, if these hardcore Japanese players had not been the first ones to pioneer the way for the rest of us. In Demon’s Souls players will take on the role of a fallen warrior bound to the Nexus in an attempt to save the land of Boletaria from an endless fog full of demons. Living and dying over and over again, they will slay demons with the aid of legendary heroes of the realm, as they gain power and try to lure The Old One back to sleep and end the nightmare.

It’s a technical marvel, and it’s a beautiful reimagining of the original hit classic made by FromSoftware in 2009. The remake keeps everything the fans loved about the original game and made it successfully reach the technological capabilities of today. This unorthodox weapon deals both Physical and Magic damage, giving it various damage types to exploit enemy weaknesses.

Demon’s Souls resurrects a game that could have easily become a historical footnote overshadowed by its more popular successors. In the process, it also manages to get everyone excited about the potential of next-gen console gaming. It’s the best next-gen launch game and a damn good entry into the Soulslike genre. The PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls is, in the ways that matter most, the best version of the game, but that still leaves us with the question of why you should care about Demon’s Souls in the first place. You don’t walk away from a game like Demon’s Souls without a few good stories to share. When I think back on my time with the PS5 remake, two moments that occurred fairly early on in the game spring to mind.

The change to the heads-up display or HUD and the user-interface or UI is something that the Demon’s Souls community has been up in arms about since the remake’s release in late 2020. Some fans believe that the lack of item names and modernization of many of the design elements take away from the immersion of the game. Others feel it’s an upgrade that modernizes the game in the right way and makes it look much more accessible to gamers who didn’t experience the original game back in 2009 on the PS3.

Various weapons and magic can be used to fight enemies while different pieces of armor worn for defense. Shields can also be equipped to block or parry incoming physical attacks. Casting spells and miracles require tools such as catalysts and talismans.

One cool fact about this build is that it does not require any spells, yet it easily takes out waves of enemies. As you probably know, Demon’s Souls is a remake of the 2009 PS3 game that (spiritual predecessors aside) gave birth to the Soulslike Action RPG genre. The remake is developed by Bluepoint Games, who you may know as the team behind the stunningly beautiful Shadow of the Colossus remake.

You were forced to do run after run, and that repetitious practicing of combat, platforming (or whatever gameplay style it was), enemy and trap placement, and secrets helped create both exponential difficulty and replayability. It’s no secret that the Souls series was heavily inspired by Castlevania. The Souls titles just require similar determination as the retro era, where losing doesn’t make you feel defeated but rather invigorated to get better, to fight the bastard who killed you. The recently released Demon’s Souls remake on PlayStation 5, like the 2018 Shadow of the Colossus reboot, is difficult to talk about.

The weapon scales very well with your Magic stat, and it allows you to passively regenerate mana while it is equipped. This extra ability is great if you are looking to use spells often either to get through an area or take down a difficult boss weak to magic damage. In addition to a world full of demons, some jerks have left traps all over Boletaria. Watch out for hidden switches, enemies hiding behind walls, and bottomless pits.
